Campsites are available at the base of the mountain. The Masungi Karst is a conservation area in the Philippines situated in the southern Sierra Madre range, 47 kilometres (28 mi) east of Manila. It centers on the geological formations of Masungi Rock, at an elevation of 640 metres (2,100 ft). In 1993, the Masungi Rock and its vicinity was proposed to be declared as a Strict Nature Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. It has been a popular destination for hikes and day trips.
Stories: The Masungi karst located an hour and a half away from the dense capital of Metro Manila on the island of Luzon, the Philippines. With illegal logging being prevalent in the area in the 1990s, and with no specific surface karst protection laws in the country, the area underwent restoration for over two decades starting in 1996. Key challenges that were encountered included professional squatting, illegal logging, and quarrying interests. To ensure the sustainability of the initiative, it was opened to the public in December 2015. Today the reserve brings together concepts in geotourism/geoparks, conservation development and private land conservation to encourage sustainable man nature interactions in tourism.
